Data Center Overload

July 2nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Data Security, IT Industry

On a recent rainy evening in Brooklyn, I was at a friend’s house playing (a bit sheepishly, given my incipient middle age) Call of Duty: World at War. Scrolling through the game’s menus, I noticed a screen for Xbox Live, which allows you to play against remote users via broadband. The number of Call of Duty players online at that moment? More than 66,000.

Walking home, I ruminated on the number. Sixty-six thousand is the population of a small city — Muncie, Ind., for one. Who and where was this invisible metropolis? What infrastructure was needed to create this city of ether?

We have an almost inimical incuriosity when it comes to infrastructure. It tends to feature in our thoughts only when it’s not working. The Google search results that are returned in 0.15 seconds were once a stirring novelty but soon became just another assumption in our lives, like the air we breathe. Yet whose day would proceed smoothly without the computing infrastructure that increasingly makes it possible to navigate the world and our relationships within it?

Much of the daily material of our lives is now dematerialized and outsourced to a far-flung, unseen network. The stack of letters becomes the e-mail database on the computer, which gives way to Hotmail or Gmail. The clipping sent to a friend becomes the attached PDF file, which becomes a set of shared bookmarks, hosted offsite. The photos in a box are replaced by JPEGs on a hard drive, then a hosted sharing service like Snapfish. The tilting CD tower gives way to the MP3-laden hard drive which itself yields to a service like Pandora, music that is always “there,” waiting to be heard. Read more…

Mitigate Risks, Demonstrate Compliance, and Maximize the Benefits of Database Monitoring without Impacting Performance

June 30th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Data Security

As with other areas of information security, database security practices are driven by the need to mitigate risks. Conducting database discovery processes and vulnerability assessments are the first steps to implementing a comprehensive database security strategy. Once those two steps are done, it is time to move on to assessment and mitigation stages. In this white paper, we outline fundamental steps in assessment and mitigation and then consider the role of database monitoring for ongoing security.

Read this white paper to learn how to implement mitigation strategies and ongoing controls, including database activity monitoring. Read more…

Make the Right Database Investment

June 30th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Data Security

In this paper the Standish Group International, Inc. has put together a comprehensive comparison of the Oracle11g database and the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) 15 database. This paper starts by comparing basic cost of the “computer room” then compares the application cost, and finally the cost of downtime for a given organization utilizing either database. Those comparisons are used to find the total cost of ownership (TCO).

By the end of reading this paper you will learn that the clear winner is Sybase ASE 15 database. Enterprises choose Sybase ASE on Linux for mission-critical applications that demand lightning-fast performance, while maintaining lower overall costs and the benefits of open technology. The ASE takes performance to new levels for the demanding requirements of transaction-intensive, mission-critical OLTP and decision support applications on Linux.

Read this paper to learn why Sybase is the right choice for your enterprise today. Read more…

SAP on Linux: Basics, Migration Tips and How to Get Started

June 30th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Data Security, Open Source

Running SAP on Linux is an increasingly popular option these days. Though SAP has supported Linux for about 10 years, more and more companies are considering making the switch, especially those with aging Unix environments and increased pressure to lower costs and increase operational efficiency. A lower total cost of ownership (TCO) is only one driver, according to Sanjeev Aggarwal, partner with Hurwitz and Associates, a Newton, Mass.-based analyst firm. Organizations should also consider the potential impacts on reliability, scalability, security, performance and infrastructure flexibility. But as with any change, migrating to SAP on Linux must be carefully planned to avoid downtime or other adverse effects.

In this 15-minute Expert Podcast, appropriate for SAP and other IT professionals, listeners will find out more about running SAP on Linux, including:

* Why more organizations are considering running SAP on Linux - and when to consider a migration
* The pros and cons of running SAP on Linux, and impacts on short and long term SAP strategy
* How to propose and plan a migration to running SAP on Linux from other operating systems, such as Unix Read more…

SQL Server Database Backup and Restore Planning

June 29th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Data Security, Enterprise, Programming

Whether a business is small, medium or large business, it must have a well-written plan for backing up the servers. Planning a backup strategy up-front and documenting not only the backup process but also the restore process, will save you a ton of time in the end. Because of its value to the company and the sensitive nature of it, the classification of data must be carefully considered in the planning stage. Based upon these classifications, the backup and restore plan will need to be tested and adjusted. While planning stage, data should be ranked according to sensitivity and value to the business.

With data that is highly valuable to a company, plans must include an increased backup frequency due to the nature of the costs incurred while recapturing data in case of a to disaster. Recoverability plans must also consider the availability requirements of this data. With highly sensitive data, plans must include encryption of backups, especially when this data is stored offsite.

With a SQL Server, DBAs should also be concerned with the OS, the applications that the server runs and finally the databases. In other words, the entire server needs a backup and recovery plan. User databases are critical to backup plan, but system databases that contain significant information like Users, SQL Jobs and other system functionality, must also be taken into account.

Hitchcock Schools Protects SQL Servers and Data with Replay AppImage

June 29th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Data Security, Enterprise, IT Industry

The Hitchcock Independent School District in Hitchcock, Texas serves 1,200 students in grades K - 12 through 4 schools with a new elementary school on the way. The IT group at Hitchcock, led by Chris Armacost, Director of Technology, is responsible for all the end-user devices, network equipment, and servers that support students, teachers, administrators, and the district’s Head Start and other special education programs. Central to their mission is protecting student (e.g. grades, reports, plans), business, and course application data that resides on SQL servers. That would be a much bigger worry if it weren’t for Replay AppImage. “I don’t spend hours on tape backups and then worry about dirty tapes anymore,” says Armacost. “Replay AppImage takes snapshots every 15 minutes and if a server does go down, we’ll just restore it.”

Security Solutions for UNIX/Linux Audits

June 29th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Data Security, Open Source

As UNIX/Linux systems become more prevalent in organizations, the need to secure them becomes more urgent. This is especially true since compliance mandates, as interpreted by the courts, become more stringent. A security or compliance audit can be a valuable ally in identifying the vulnerabilities of your UNIX/Linux systems. But since US firms must on average meet three compliance regulations, many would prefer to secure their UNIX/Linux systems prior to the audit.

Read this whitepaper to learn a valuable solution to centralized access control that also controls costs. The Symark PowerBroker architecture provides for centralized policy processing and logging that allow highly efficient configuration and maintenance, even in a group of heterogeneous machine types.
