Real Estate Lists Grow Comfortable With the Web

July 1st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in IT Industry, Personal, Programming

AS if home buyers do not have it good enough already, finding a house for sale on the Web is becoming easier.

The triple threat of a weak market, legal pressure and increasing competition has compelled real estate professionals to offer their information more freely online, putting cracks in a walled garden of data that stood strong while the industry enjoyed its breakaway growth. It also presages an end to the days when sellers must list their homes with a broker so buyers can see them.

The trend revolves around the nation’s roughly 900 multiple listing services, or M.L.S.’s, where local brokers post information about homes they are selling. In years past, these services were highly restrictive about where and how that information could be distributed — for instance, frequently not permitting Web sites to display M.L.S. listings alongside for-sale-by-owner homes, bank foreclosures or other properties not represented by real estate agents.

Now, these organizations are connecting more freely with sites like Zillow, Terabitz, ZipRealty, Redfin and others. And while these sites do not have all the M.L.S. data, they have enough to give users more of a one-stop site for real estate shopping than ever before. Read more…

SQL Server Database Backup and Restore Planning

June 29th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Data Security, Enterprise, Programming

Whether a business is small, medium or large business, it must have a well-written plan for backing up the servers. Planning a backup strategy up-front and documenting not only the backup process but also the restore process, will save you a ton of time in the end. Because of its value to the company and the sensitive nature of it, the classification of data must be carefully considered in the planning stage. Based upon these classifications, the backup and restore plan will need to be tested and adjusted. While planning stage, data should be ranked according to sensitivity and value to the business.

With data that is highly valuable to a company, plans must include an increased backup frequency due to the nature of the costs incurred while recapturing data in case of a to disaster. Recoverability plans must also consider the availability requirements of this data. With highly sensitive data, plans must include encryption of backups, especially when this data is stored offsite.

With a SQL Server, DBAs should also be concerned with the OS, the applications that the server runs and finally the databases. In other words, the entire server needs a backup and recovery plan. User databases are critical to backup plan, but system databases that contain significant information like Users, SQL Jobs and other system functionality, must also be taken into account.

I’m taking that night off to make sure my marriage stays intact. So the room will be open tonight at 5 p.m. as usual. ALSO, this is yet another reminder that the DMN Rangers Blog Night is tomorrow. Tickets are still available. We’ve got a nice group coming, but it’s not too late to join us.
